5 Fashion Faux Pas That Could Ruin Your First Date

With the changing of the year, the wise men may well decide to instigate a few changes of their own. He may use the sense of renewal and rejuvenation that comes with the new year as an opportunity to ditch the wobbly parts that have been causing him embarrassment and get into shape. He may decide that he’s been coasting in his career long enough and decide that it’s time to start job hunting and networking. He may even decide that now’s the time to start his own business. He may start thinking more about the food on his plate, not just in terms of how healthy it is but in terms of the ethical cost. And perhaps he may decide that he’s been single long enough and that it’s time to get back in the dating game.

Following the proliferation of digital dating apps, there are more opportunities than ever for a gentleman to meet that special someone. Indeed, if he conducts himself as a gentleman he stands an excellent chance of meeting someone special since unfortunately, a lot of men don’t behave particularly well on dating apps.

Still, even if you’ve gotten along swimmingly in the digital realm, the first date is a nerve-wracking prospect for anyone. Male or female, young or old, we all get a little bit anxious when it comes to making that all-important first impression on someone special. When raiding your wardrobe for the perfect outfit it’s essential to avoid the following fashion faux pas if you don’t want to send the lady (or gentleman) of your dreams heading straight for the emergency exit...

Glasses that inhibit eye contact

The eyes are the windows into the soul and eye contact is an important component of the kind of meaningful connection you’ll be hoping to build. However, if you’re a glasses wearer be wary that your frames can inhibit eye contact or distort the size and shape of your eyes. Moreover, your frames can change the shape of your face and create a less than flattering first impression.

Check out International Eyewear for a wide range of glasses frames for men. You’re bound to find something that will help you to look your best while also ensuring that you bump into things. If you’re a contact lens wearer you may wish to use these at first and breaking out the glasses when you are more familiar. If, however, you want to put your glasses on front street, the good news is that 80% of women find men with glasses attractive.

A beard that’s out of control

Beards are in many ways the ultimate fashion accessory and they’re still going strong in 2019. Beards are great for a number of reasons. They can change the shape of your face and square off your jawline. They can draw attention away from a receding hairline. They can lend maturity to a babyface and give you a feeling of confidence and surety.

However, when your beard isn't properly maintained it can quickly grow out of control. Reign yours in with some beard oil or if you want to play it safe, break out the clippers and bring it right down to a light stubble. This offers the best of both worlds.

A super tight shirt

You may be super proud of the hard work you’ve put in at the gym and think that a tight-fitting shirt is the best way to show it. However, this is not necessarily advisable on a first date. While many appreciate a muscular physique it may come across as vanity if you use your first date as an opportunity to showcase the big guns. What’s more, a tight shirt can be extremely unforgiving of love handles and if you have an excess of belly fat despite your prodigious guns, the last thing you want is for it to be poking through the gaping buttonholes of your tight shirt. The sad truth is that most of us have more wobbly stuff and less muscle than we think and a shirt that’s too tight can make us terrified by the prospect of eating sitting down or breathing on the all-important first date.

Dress a little more conservatively for the first date and save the big guns for date number two.

Anything with superheroes or gaming characters on it

We get it, you want to wear your geekiness on your sleeve. You want to plant your flag in the ground and say “This is who I am”. But while a t-shirt with a Green Lantern logo or an image of Samus Aran may indicate a playful side or an indication that we don’t take ourselves too seriously, it can come across as a sign of immaturity to those not in the geek community.

Find subtler ways of representing your fandom or save it until you’re a little better acquainted.

Never wear Crocs. Not for a date. Not for anything. They look weird and they make your feet smell. If you already own Crocs, bury them 6 feet underground with a wooden stake through them.

Steer clear of these faux pas and you’ll make the impression you need to have a great first date!
